Stretch of Route 12B named after Deputy Kurt Wyman

By JOLEEN FERRIS

CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - The stretch of road he frequently patrolled now bears the name of an Oneida County Sheriff's Deputy killed in the line of duty.

Deputy Kurt Wyman was shot and killed in June of last year, following a six-hour standoff with an armed man in the town of Augusta. Wyman left a wife and two children, the younger of whom-daughter Addyson, was born the day he died.

The Deputy Kurt Wyman Memorial Highway is Route 12B behind First Niagara Bank in Clinton, not far from where the young deputy used to live on Furnace Street. While it is a very public reminder of the young deputy's service and sacrifice, it's a very personal gesture for his wife, Lauren.

"He would call me and say 'go wave out the kitchen window, I'm going to go by. You'll see the car go by. And I still remember on June 6 sitting at the dinning room table playing cards with my family waiting to go into labor and I saw his car go flying by with lights and sirens and I just thought 'oh, he's doing his job. He's going to work, so this really holds a lot more meaning really than I think anybody understood," says Lauren Wyman.

Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney and Senator Joe Griffo introduced the bill in the state legislature; the governor signed it in July. Oneida County Sheriff's Department PBA President Michael Simmons got the idea in motion to honor his co-worker.
